From: "John Feldsted" <jfeldsted@shaw.ca>
Subject: Crocodile tears and other Liberal eyewash
2017 is going to be a wild ride. We live in interesting times and maintaining an equilibrium during media inspired crisis, protests and wild rumours will require fortitude and resilience. Our federal government is adrift with nothing but vague statements and a lot of travel to show for its efforts.

Trudeau is so tone deaf that he thought he could replace a first past the post system that has served us through 23 Prime Ministers presiding over 42 different parliaments during a span of 150 years without upsetting many people. Tinkering with our electoral system is not a priority for Canadians.

Our government has promised legislation to legalize marijuana this spring. Not everyone is aboard with the legalization of street drugs, safe injection sites and equipping paramedics and police with anti-overdose kits. Apparently, asking people to refrain from ingesting potentially lethal street drugs is not adequate to protect them from themselves. There is a point when someone is determined to self-destruct that we must cease interference and prepare for a funeral.

Trudeau has a promised carbon tax on the table. The US has withdrawn from the global warming nonsense and our government is a lonesome proponent of this new tax. Australia tried it and has put carbon tax on the scrap heap as a failed experiment. The hit on cost of living was too high, but our tone-deaf PM does not seem to care about people who earn less than the $45,000 taxable income at the bottom of his ‘middle class’.

Trudeau is going to be looking at increased defence spending for our participation in NATO. We have been derelict for decades, failing to put up our fair share of costs for the alliance. We need to step up to the plate as NATO is the only organization left trying to maintain world peace and good order.

Trudeau thinks the sun rises and sets on the UN, but it is a dismal failure. Instead of preventing wars and genocide, the UN is pleading with civilized nations to give aid to the refugee crisis it was created to prevent. The US has put the UN on notice that numerous anti-American and anti-western efforts by UN members will no longer be tolerated. The UN has about 192 members of which 79 (41%) are democracies who pay the costs of UN operations while dictators and tyrants run the place. That is not acceptable.
In Trudeau’s world, everyone with a taxable income (after personal exemptions, age exemptions, allowances for dependants, union and professional dues, etc.) between $45,000 and $210,000 is ‘middle class’. His 3% surcharge on the rich kicks at a breathtaking $230,000 taxable income.

We want an economy that supports jobs that pay decent wages, a lower tax burden, smaller and less intrusive government. We want our elected representatives to deal with us as the adults we are. We do not need them to make choices for us or ‘for the public good’. They are not in Ottawa to rule us or to mandate what is socially acceptable and personally responsible. We want our children and grandchildren to mature into responsible adults, able to make wise choices and live comfortably in a safe and secure nation.

The political class holds up one flawed person after another as a ‘leader’ who will take us to the promised land when what we need is a competent administrator, able to provide us with needed services efficiently and effectively. The political class and elites who surround them are not on the same page as the people paying taxes and that must change. We can do without them, but the reverse is not true.

Subject: Re:  Canadas AAA Rating on thin ice as Trump policies threaten trade, Feb. 10
http://www.waterloochronicle.ca/news-story/7124491-canada-s-aaa-rating-on-thin-ice-as-trump-policies-threaten-trade/

The credit rating agencies gave triple-A grades to investments containing sub-prime mortgages. Those investments subsequently collapsed.

The agencies also began reducing Japan's rating in the 1990s because of its high debt-to-GDP ratio, but nonetheless investors continue to buy Japanese bonds today even at negative interest rates. Those investors understand that sovereign countries with floating fiat currencies can never be forced into default.  As former Chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan has stated,"The United States can pay any debt it has because we can always print money to do that. So there is zero probability of default."

Credit ratings should be ignored  -  they have been seriously compromised by conflicts of interest and by misunderstanding of sovereign debt as applied to countries like Canada.

Footnotes:

1. Alan Greenspan, "We can always print money..."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6vi528gseA

"The United States can pay any debt it has because we can always print money to do that. So there is zero probability of default."

2. What is the risk of sovereign default?
http://bilbo.economicoutlook.net/blog/?p=6857

In November 1998, the day after the Japanese Government announced a large-scale fiscal stimulus to its ailing economy, Moodys made the first of a series of downgradings of the Japanese Governments yen-denominated bonds, by taking the Aaa (triple A) rating away. By December 2001, they further downgraded Japanese sovereign debt to Aa3 from Aa2. Then on May 31, 2002, they cut Japans long-term credit rating by a further two grades to A2, or below that given to Botswana, Chile and Hungary.
***
In the New York Times the logic of the rating was questioned:
How could a country that receives foreign aid from Japan have a better rating than Japan itself? Japan, with an economy almost 1,000 times the size of Botswanas, has the worlds largest foreign reserves, $446 billion; the worlds largest domestic savings, $11.4 trillion; and about $1 trillion in overseas investments.

The Telegraph article said of Japan:

Bizarrely, securities backed by mortgages sold to people without the income to service the debt they were taking on were being judged a better credit risk than the sovereign government of Japan, with the ability in extremis both to raise taxes and print money to avoid a default.
