Subject: Re: Andrew Scheer on Vancouver Island; observations of a Tory disappointed by the "new" Conservatives.

As a former Progressive Conservative policy wonk who found Harper and McKay's "new"� Conservative party less than welcoming, I attended Andrew Scheer's Vancouver Island party event north of Victoria, January 25th, near Duncan to listen to what he had to say on his own terms unfiltered by media.

Far from reason to be encouraged or a positive plan for anything, much less creating opportunities for Canadians, Andrew is just trying to keep together the unstable PC-CA coalition. He showed BC and Canada why the CPC is not electable. "Unite the right" meant hiding behind Tory branding to push CA policy.

Privately he managed to deny Sir John A. Macdonald's vision of a Tory party "willing to embrace every person desirous of being called a progressive Conservative" (source: National Archives), the definition of real Conservatives in Canada now and when Sir John A. made this historic statement of what it means to be a conservative in the English-speaking world.

Publicly he lashed out at Liberals instead of talking about a positive plan, fell back on lame comments about cutting taxes and government regulation and denied the key role of government in building the economy and nationhood, sounding very neoconservative and libertarian; he repeated Stephen Harper's racist attacks on compensation to Canadians wrongly Gitmo imprisoned or tortured, in particular Omar Khadr, and fails to understand Canadians lured into the ISIS obscenity they have left, created by the Bush invasion of Iraq Harper endorsed, should not be treated like ISIS itself.

Andrew Scheer is trying to put a pleasant face on the same politics Canadians threw out of office October 19, 2015.

Brigitte Pellerin fails to realize that despite Ontario government�s subsidies of $14,000 for electric cars, few people buy emission-free electric cars because there are very few charging stations. If there were no gas stations, no one will buy gasoline cars even if you provide them subsidies for buying gas cars. To understand electric car revolution, Pellerin should look at China, not Canada.

In a news analysis: �China hastens the world toward an electric future,� published in Financial Post on Oct. 11, 2017 (reprinted from the New York Times), columnist Keith Bradsher wrote from Shenzhen: �There is a powerful reason that automakers world wide are speeding up their efforts to develop electric vehicles and that reason is China. Already China is the world�s largest maker and seller of electric cars. Chinese buyers are on track to snap up almost 300,000 of them this year.�

China not only provides generous subsidies for electric cars, but it also has built thousands of charging stations around the country. Beijing, a city of 23 million, has 7,000 charging stations, compared to just one in Ottawa with a million people. Brigitte Pellerin also fails to realize that without charging stations, no company can use electric trucks for delivery. If there were enough charging stations, delivery charges would be much as electricity cost less than gas.

This January, an Iranian oil tanker exploded and sank following a collision with a cargo ship off the coast of China. Toxic fumes and fuels were released over many square miles, and 32 crew members were killed. The plan to increase tanker traffic seven-fold through narrow straits in B.C. invites a similar disaster here, threatening the health of both the human and wildlife populations, and the potential loss of tens of thousands of jobs in the tourist and fishery industries.

As for Alberta, its legitimate needs could be met by a visionary federal government making major investments in transit infrastructure, building retrofits, renewable energies, clean technologies, and community employment programs. A federally-supported Just Transition program would assist workers and entrepreneurs in all regions as our economy transforms and reduces reliance on fossil fuels. The national interest demands policies that promote common prosperity, not divisive stances that incite an inter-provincial war that will not have two winners.

The concept is ridiculous.

Our intelligence agencies exist to protect our nation and its people from attack.

We are employing highly skilled, well-paid experts to track information, analyse it and determine what risks, if any, Canada faces. They are not hired to maintain quality control over electronic products.

Requiring our intelligence community to warn manufacturers of product flaws is a waste of agency resources. The concept that our security services have an obligation to warn manufacturers (or the public) about product flaws is silly. A public warning about a product flaw will result in legal action by the producer. Then we can add legal costs and a possible damage award to the money wasted by having our spies act as product quality control agents.

Why can�t our MPs focus on real problems that plague us?

The federal deficit is significant not for its numerical size, but for whether it closes the output gap - the additional amount required after private sector spending to return the economy to full employment with price stability. Since households are loaded with debt, corporations are hoarding, and inflation is low, the federal government must inject more stimulus into the economy.

Federal debt and deficits are always financially sustainable because our government owns the Bank of Canada and can never run out of Canadian dollars. That is why troubled banks line up for government bailouts during times of financial crisis.

Pundits and politicians need to waste less time on statistical irrelevancies related to federal debt, and start focusing on looming real-world problems that actually threaten the health and welfare of Canadians. Dampening the economy through fiscal austerity would entrench long-term unemployment and exacerbate the many social ills that derive from increased poverty and inequality.
