Subject: Re:  NDP must halt 'job killing' minimum wage increase: UCP, Juris Graney, Emma Graney,  September 29, 2017

http://edmontonjournal.com/business/local-business/ndp-must-halt-job-killing-minimum-wage-increase-ucp

The focus on a potential cost of a minimum wage hike (i.e. jobs not created over a period of years) unfortunately draws attention from the overall benefits: happier and more productive employees, reduced turnover and associated training costs, and a general reduction in income and gender inequality that will result in a healthier and more stable society.

Even if there should be dis-employment effects that harm a small cohort, remedial programs could be implemented.  The provincial and federal governments should offer a youth job guarantee where all applicants will be paid and trained for work in energy conservation, youth recreation, and community services such as helping the aged.

Those who protest minimum wage hikes on the grounds that the most vulnerable will suffer continue a grand tradition of resisting progressive measures. As the late Canadian economist John Kenneth Galbraith opined, "The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."

OECD (2006) finds that:
The level of the minimum wage has no significant direct impact on unemployment

2. The truth about the minimum wage
http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/the-truth-about-the-minimum-wage
The research on minimum wage increases in the United States over the past two decades is clear:

[Moderate] increases in the minimum wage raise the hourly wage and earnings of workers in the lower part of the wage distribution and have very modest or no effects on employment, hours, and other labor market outcomes.

3. Seattle workers better off after significant minimum wage rise
http://bilbo.economicoutlook.net/blog/?p=34153
low-wage workers employment, hours and wages all rose substantially.  Neighboring areas that had similar trends in these variables before the increase and that, by the way, were also bound by the highest state minimum wage in the country when the increase took effect saw even larger employment and hours gains.

End of a royal era

Canada's myth of inclusion

The words that can make us calmer

BELOW(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)30)(30)(30)(30)(30)(30)

From: "John Feldsted" <jfeldsted@shaw.ca>
Subject: Dirty little secrets

Many Canadians are still angry with Trudeau over the $10.5 million Khadr settlement - but there appears to be much more. This story, in the Toronto Star, came out last February:

https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2017/02/17/ottawa-to-settle-lawsuit-with-three-muslim-canadians-jailed-tortured-in-syria.html

Then in March, the CBC broke the story that an apology had been made along with a settlement for an undisclosed amount:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/abdullah-almalki-apology-ottawa-morning-1.4032265

Almalki was arrested at the Damascus airport in May 2002.  El Maati was arrested at the Damascus airport in November 2001. Nureddin was stopped by Syrian officials as he crossed into Syria from visiting family in northern Iraq in December 2003. These arrests were during Liberal rule (Jean Chretien was Prime Minister).

Why are taxpayers, who must foot the bill, not informed of the settlement amount. The three had asked for $100 million in compensation or nearly 10 times the Khadr settlement.

Our MPs need to be asking some pointed questions.

Canadian governments have been supporting those who came to power in Ukraine in February 2014

Canada's two language groups both have internal cultural protections and seek to maintain them.

Minorities in Ukraine have just had theirs removed -

OUGHT CANADA  SPEAK AGAINST THIS
or give those doing it what they wish from us.

For your consideration:

Canada: Maintain cultural protections

Chrystia Freeland is to be commended for stressing the importance of maintaining Canada's cultural protections at a NAFTA dinner.(1)

As Foreign Minister this belief ought to determine her responses to Ukraine's government requests for access to Canada's satellite images (2), weapons (3) and Canadians acting on a peace keeping mission (4) while training troops for Ukraine. (5)

This action by President Petro Poroshenko, 180 degrees against Canadian cultural patterns, was signed late Monday after returning from a visit to Canada.  (6)

While here he requested access to Canadian satellite images be added to our considering providing weapons to Ukraine and our training its troops being extended to 2019.

Prime Minister Trudeau would be wise to continue not committing Canada to a role in Porschenko's UN Peacekeeping suggestion. (7)

He and his Foreign Minister would be consistent with her expressed concern for Canadian culture in the NAFTA context by joining Hungary, Poland, Romania and Russia (8) in expressing dissatisfaction to the Ukrainian President over his treatment of minorities.
