Subject: In remembrance of sacrifice

I was only five years old when WW-II ended. I grew up with stories of the war from family members, returned veterans, and those whose husbands and sons never returned.

Print media was king, and our papers and periodicals were filled with photos and stories of the war and its ugliness for a decade or two after the wars end.

Our solemn vows to never forget have faded and muted over the following decades.

World War I (1916)

Population      8,001,000
Military                619,0007.74%
Killed          61,000
Wounded 172,000
Total           233,000 37.64%

World War II (1942)
Population      11,654,000
Military                1,100,000 9.44%
Killed          44,000
Wounded 54,000
Total           98,000 8.91%

The numbers who volunteered for military service is staggering. This from a new nation comprised of mainly immigrants from all corners of the globe. Consider also that only males of the age 18 could serve.

At least 4,000 aboriginals served in WW-I and over 3,000 in WW-II. To serve, they had to give up their heritage and become Canadian citizens.

The numbers of wounded only include those physically wounded. Hundreds, if not thousands suffered shell shock psychological disorders we now call Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that went untreated and often led to premature deaths.

Governments have tried for decades to paint Canada as a benevolent peacekeeper, which is a carefully created myth. For decades, governments refused to acknowledge the Korean War, insisting it was a UN peacekeeping mission. 26,000 Canadian troops and 8 Navy destroyers took part in that war. 516 were killed and 1,042 wounded.

The Korean war was initiated by the North Korean military supported by battalions of Chinese military intent on overrunning and subjugating South Korea. Over six million soldiers, sailors and airmen fought on both sides in the Korean War. More than three million of these were communists from North Korea, China and Russia. Opposing them were almost three million from South Korea and from 21 United Nations (UN) countries.

Not all the six million were present at one time. The war began with only 200,000 North Koreans fighting 100,000 South Koreans. With the arrival of the UN, and later the Chinese armies, there were a million combatants present one year after the war began. By wars end there were more than two million ranged along the ceasefire line 1,100,000 UN and South Koreans facing 1,200,000 North Koreans and Chinese. The Soviet Unions contribution was always small and included medical units from the Soviets allies Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Bulgaria and Romania.

Casualties were horrific estimated at over 1 million on the UN side and nearly 1.5 million on the other. The war wound down to a cease fire when both sides realized they could not gain further advantage or win without incurring further heavy casualties. To demean that as a peacekeeping effort is outrageous. Leaders were afraid to admit to us how close they came to engulf us in WW-III.

The Viet Nam war has also played a significant role in our Remembrance Day. Many Americans and others around the world felt the US pursuit war in Viet Nam was wrong. There were protests and songs and the sentiment quickly grew that all war was wrong which turned to anti-military sentiment. For many, gratitude to the military for its defence of freedom turned to anger at and derision of those who serve.

It is hard to justify war except in self-defence. In a shrinking world of globalization and terrorism it is difficult to establish where a threat emanated from, but the terrorist training camps in Afghanistan led to a war there. The Middle East is volatile and unpredictable. We have no way to determine when or how future threats may arise.

Proponents of a new world order claim a more peaceful world as an objective, but history shows us that greed is pervasive and insatiable. It is a matter of time before the powers pushing a world order have a falling out and war with one another. At present no leader has the power to threaten or invade others without risking massive retaliation. How long that will last is uncertain.

We need to stand prepared to defend our sovereignty, democracy and way of life no matter what transpires over the next few decades. We need to avoid war if possible, remembering the horrors of past armed conflicts.

Freedom carries a price of eternal vigilance against those who would enslave us. That is the torch we must bear on behalf of generations of fallen soldiers. They served to protect our freedoms and we can do no less.

Those who have served, are serving and will serve in the military to protect our children and their children deserve our respect while serving and in retirement. They are our torch bearers who stand ready to save us from losing the freedoms and rights that have been earned through blood and battles over centuries.

Subject: Global warming

The Editor
National Post

Copy to: Mr. Lorrie Goldstein:  Global warming has already taken place. By massively releasing  carbon dioxide through burning fossil fuels, we have permanently destabilized our climate and will have to live with it. Devastating hurricanes, floods, droughts, forest fires will multiply. Parts of Florida and California will become unfit for human habitation. Forest fires are likely to devastate Alberta and British Columbia. So better talk about how to face these disasters.

With the world devastated by hurricanes, droughts, floods, global warming has already occurred

Re: Emission impossible, Lorrie Goldstein, Nov. 11.

With the U.S. disaster-relief agencies are on high alert after being battered by repeated hurricanes, floods, droughts, forest fires, it is clear that global warming has irreversibly occurred.

This year, I have experienced this in two far-flung countries Australia and Canada. In May, I was visiting Perth, Australia. It was supposed to be autumn, and yet, an unrelenting heat wave was sweeping across the continent, with temperatures hovering between 35c to 40c in Sydney, Brisbane and other cities accompanied by severe droughts. Sheep and cows were dying of thirst and crops are drying for the lack of rain. This led to columnists talk about year-round summer in Australia and the devastating droughts in the worlds driest continent.

After returning to Ottawa, we faced a devastating tornado. Although our house was spared, many others were totally destroyed. This summer has been particularly hot, with droughts and forest fires raging across North America, Europe and Asia. Parts of British Columbia were devastated by forest fires. France, Germany, Italy and Britain faced devastating floods.

Now winter is setting in North America and yet, forest fires are raging in California. Because of hot and dry air, the forest fire around Malibu County is so intense that luxury homes are being threated as never before. If forest fires are this intense in winter, you may imagine how devastating it would be when summer arrives.

It seems that we have lost the fight against global warming and no amount of carbon tax will reverse it. It is too late to stem the global warming. By burning fossil fuels to run hundreds of millions of carbon-spewing gasoline cars, we might have permanently destabilized the climate  This year, China has achieved the dubious distinction of being the most car-owning country in the world, with 350 million cars more cars than in the U.S. and Canada combined. No wonder China is producing most greenhouse gases.

So, lets prepare for devastating storms, floods, droughts and forest fires. Disaster relief should be the priority. This will cost hundreds of billions of dollars. So, prepare to raise taxes to pay for it.

Public distrust of economists stands in the way

Re:
Will Democrats now be free-traders? by William Watson, Nov. 8.

In the latest issue of Foreign Affairs, Karen Dynan, Professor of the Practice of Economics at Harvard, writes: An uncomfortable truth for American economists is that they have limited influence on economic policy. Take trade, for example. Anyone who has studied introductory economics knows that free trade benefits countries in the long run, by allowing them to specialize in producing the goods and services in which they have a comparative advantage. Yet free trade has never been popular in Washington. The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed costly tariffs on imports from Canada, China, Mexico and the EU.

Why dont economists have more influence? Answer to the question has been provided by Alan Blinder, a prominent economist, who served in U.S. President Bill Clintons Council of Economic Advisers, in his new book, Advice and Dissent.

According to Blinder, the root of the problem is that politicians are dealing with a fundamentally different set of constraints than economists are. The situation is made worse by what he calls political short-termism. Politicians who face re-election tend to adopt policies that promise gains in the near future, even if the cost will outweigh the benefits in the long run. Conversely, economists favour short-term cost in order to realize long-term benefits. As trust in experts has declined, it has become easier for politicians to offer far-fetched solutions regardless of their economic merit.

With anti-trade Donald Trump has made Buy American protectionism the centrepiece of his policy, free trade has been replaced by (mis)managed trade and as long Trump remains president, free trade will remain toxic for politicians. Voters, not economists, will decide who will be the next president.

Subject:Trudeau apologizes for Canada's 1939 refusal of Jewish refugee ship

Steve Scherer
Reuters News
November 7, 2018

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadas Prime Minister Justin Trudeau formally apologized on Wednesday for the countrys 1939 refusal to take in a ship carrying more than 900 Jewish refugees, adding that the country would do more to protect Canadian Jews from violence.

The St. Louis left Hamburg in May 1939 in a desperate search for a safe haven from persecution by Nazi Germany. After it was rebuffed by Canada and other nations, it returned to Europe, where historians have estimated that more than 250 of the passengers were murdered in Nazi death camps.

We apologize to the 907 German Jews aboard the St. Louis, as well as their families, Trudeau told the House of Commons. We are sorry for the callousness of Canadas response. We are sorry for not apologizing sooner.

The apology came less than two weeks after a gunman shot dead 11 people, including a Canadian woman, at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. Vigils were held across Canada in the aftermath of the attack.

Trudeau seems unwilling to understand that he can only apologize for his own actions and behaviour.

There is something ironic and hypocritical about apologizing for a Liberal Prime Minister who made a poor decision 80 years ago.

William Lyon Mackenzie King has been repeatedly and thoroughly disparaged for his decision not to allow the St. Louis to land. History has not been kind on the issue, and rightly so. However, to keep the event in perspective Canada was not the only nation to refuse acceptance of the St. Lewis and her Jewish passengers.

As we age, we reminisce and think to ourselves how life would differ if we knew what we know now at age 20. Looking back at 1939 knowing about the horrors of WW-II and the holocaust is far different from trying to look forward six years from 1939 to 1945.

We can be ashamed of a government decision made in 1939, but we cannot apologize for it. Our grandchildren will judge us on the decisions our government is making today. We can acknowledge unacceptable discrimination of the past and commit to erasing discrimination in the present. Actions speak louder than words.

Vowing to protect Jewish and Muslim places of worship is an admission that hatred is still stalks our society. We have not erased racial and religious hatreds. Christians also face faith-based discrimination and that is a glaring omission from the apology statement. As equals we have the right to worship in peace and safety. We cannot accept anyone to be targeted by hatred.

Subject: Liberals will spend $86 million to tackle rise in gang and gun violence
Money will aim to stop smuggled guns from entering Canada and help RCMP investigate firearm crimes

Kathleen Harris
CBC News
Nov 08, 2018

The Liberal government is spending $86 million to boost efforts to block smuggled guns at the border and stop the scourge of gun violence in the United States from creeping into Canada.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale and Bill Blair, the minister of border security and organized crime reduction, announced Thursday that $51.5 million will be spent over five years for the Canada Border Services Agency to build an all-weather detector dog training facility, deploy more sniffer dog teams and expand X-ray technology at postal centres and air cargo facilities. More training on detecting concealed items in vehicles entering Canada is also planned.

Another $34.5 million will go to the RCMP to enhance investigations, training, inspections, technology and intelligence.

The money comes from a $327 million pot to tackle gangs and gun violence announced last year. Of that sum, $200 million will go to provinces and territories to address regional needs.

Blair said that because gangs have different origins across the country and operate in both rural and urban areas, it's critical to give the provinces money to address specific needs.

No 'blanket solutions'

"Blanket solutions and a one-size-fits-all approach (do) not work," he said.

Thursday's announcement comes as the U.S. reels from another mass shooting incident, this time at a Southern California bar. Thirteen people died in the gun attack in Thousand Oaks, California Wednesday night.

Blair said Canada has a "fundamentally different" culture and approach to firearms, but Canadians are increasingly worried about the spike in domestic incidents.

"What we are seeing is an increase in gun violence across our country, a greater influence, and Canadians ... have told us they're very concerned about the level of gun violence taking part in their communities," he said.

We are working at the wrong end of the firearm. Mandatory sentences for firearms offences were struck down as unconstitutional because the law was not linked to the commission of a crime. Firearms legislation, particularly the regulations issued thereunder, are so broad and complex, it is possible to ensnare someone who is not a threat to society.

That does not prevent us from enacting laws with a minimum sentence for unlicensed possession of a restricted weapons which would include all handguns and most automatic weapons. Licensing and regulations for handling and use of handguns are very strict. The government can employ the notwithstanding clause if necessary.

Firearms used in the commission of a crime, including possession of a firearm during a crime is a very serious threat to public safety. The criminal who carries a firearm when committing a crime is prepared to commit murder and should face a court charged with attempted murder and a sentence to be served consecutively to other charges incurred in the same incident whether the firearm was discharged or not.

We need to extend the laws to increase the sentences for anyone who uses a weapon of any kind in the commission of a crime including assault.

If gang members know they can be looking at a life sentence for using a firearm in the commission of a crime, they will think twice about arming themselves.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act must be amended to exclude underaged persons who use a firearm to commit a crime. They are coerced by gang members to commit gun crimes as an initiation as they will receive a minimal sentence under the YCJA.

Anyone employing a firearm in the commission of a crime should be ineligible for bail pending trial.

We cannot continue to pretend we are concerned about the criminal use of guns while we do not ensure that the penalties for using a lethal weapon reflect that concern. We must deal with the criminals, not the hardware. We will not block the black market in firearms any more than we blocked the black market in drugs. Until we get tough on criminals, we will see more lives lost. The gangster in prison will not be shooting rivals, innocent bystanders or responding police officers.
